Orally administered mixed carotenoids protect human skin against ultraviolet A‐induced skin pigmentation: A double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, randomized clinical trial
Photodermatology, Photoimmunology and Photomedicine Mar 20, 2020
Baswan SM, Marini A, Klosner AE, et al. - In this double‐blind, placebo‐controlled trial involving 60 individuals (Fitzpatrick types II‐IV), researchers clinically assessed the photoprotective impacts of daily supplementation with carotenoids against UVA radiation‐induced pigmentation. Study participants were randomized to receive Nutrilite Multi Carotene supplement or placebo for 12 weeks. A significant increase in skin carotenoid levels, UVB‐induced MED, and UVA-induced minimal persistent pigmentation dose values obtained by colorimetry was observed in the intervention group compared with the placebo group. The authors concluded that daily carotenoid supplementation prevents both the UVB-induced erythema and UVA-induced pigmentation of human skin.
