Open reduction and internal fixation versus nonoperative treatment for closed, displaced, intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus: long-term follow-up from the HeFT randomized controlled trial
The Bone & Joint Journal Jun 10, 2021
Dickenson EJ, et al. - This study sought to present the long-term outcomes of the UK Heel Fracture Trial, a pragmatic, multicentre, two-arm, assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial. Researchers enrolled a total of 151 patients aged over 16 years with closed displaced, intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus. Individuals were assigned randomly to open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) or nonoperative treatment. ORIF of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures, not causing fibular impingement, demonstrated no difference in outcomes at 60 months in comparison with nonoperative treatment, but with an elevated risk of additional surgery.
