Open epidural blood patch to augment durotomy repair in lumbar spine surgery: Surgical technique and cohort study
The Spine Journal Jun 18, 2021
Xiong GX, Tobert D, Fogel H, et al. - Researchers aimed at comparing the outcomes of dural repair augmentation using an open intraoperative epidural blood patch vs a hydrogel technique. In this retrospective comparative cohort study, they assessed patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery who sustained an incidental durotomy. Among 732 patients, 48 met the study criteria; 25 in the hydrogel group and 23 in the EBP group. Findings suggest that an open, intraoperatively placed epidural blood patch is possibly an efficacious and cost-effective approach to manage an incidental durotomy.
