One-year follow-up of conduction abnormalities after transcatheter aortic valve implantation with the SAPIEN 3 valve
The American Journal of Cardiology Aug 03, 2019
Dolci G, Vollema EM, van der Kley F, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of 266 patients with severe aortic stenosis who had transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) with a new generation device, Edwards SAPIEN 3 (S3), researchers focused on the incidence and time-course of new conduction abnormalities and the rate of permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI). They found that the PR interval duration and QRS complex width increased significantly post-TAVI. Sixty-five patients (24%) developed new-onset left bundle branch block following TAVI. During the follow-up, 35 patients (13%) needed PPI. The only variables that showed an independent link with PPI were baseline right bundle branch block and QRS width immediately following TAVI. In this study, the temporary nature of conduction disorders post-TAVI was highlighted, along with a trend towards stabilization during the following months. The use of this novel generation device was associated with a relatively low incidence of new conduction abnormalities needing PPI.
