Ocular exposures reported to poison control centers from 2011 to 2015

American Journal of Ophthalmology Mar 16, 2019

Heise CW, et al. - From 2011 to 2015 in the US, investigators assessed data from 477,274 calls for ocular exposure to the National Poison Data System to recognize and distinguish the ocular exposures described to poison control centers over a 5-year period. They noticed the occurrence of most serious adult exposures at work due to alkali exposures. An incline in exposures among subjects of age more than 64 years old was also reported. Irrigation and wash for the affected eyes were the most common treatment provided. They noted higher susceptibility among kids under 5 years of age as they were inclined towards permanent disability due to laundry detergent exposure. Hence, a concerted intervention was required for this age group.
