Occupational and environmental risk factors for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in Australia: Case–control study
Thorax Jul 16, 2020
Abramson MJ, Murambadoro T, Alif SM, et al. - Using Australian IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) registry, researchers sought to determine potential occupational as well as environmental exposures related to IPF in Australia. This study involved 503 cases (mean±SD age 71±9 years, 69% male) and 902 controls (71±8 years, 69% male). An increased risk of IPF was reported in correlation with ever smoking tobacco, but ever use of marijuana was shown to be related to decreased risk following adjustment for tobacco. Experts reported 12.6-fold increased risk of IPF in correlation with a family history of pulmonary fibrosis. Overall, it was concluded that intensified tobacco control, occupational dust control measures as well as elimination of asbestos at work, all could result in decreased burden of IPF.
