Obstetric outcomes in pregnancies resulting from in vitro fertilization are not different in fertile, sterilized women compared to infertile women: A Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology database analysis
Fertility and Sterility Mar 19, 2021
Libby V, DeVilbiss E, Chung M, et al. - Obstetric and neonatal outcomes resulting from assisted reproductive technology were compared in couples with a history of female sterilization vs couples with other infertility diagnoses. In this retrospective cohort study, they assessed preterm birth rates and low birth weight rates from IVF pregnancies in couples with infertility and in couples with prior tubal ligation as their sole indication for IVF. A total of 8,478 fertile women and 371,488 infertile women were included. Outcomes revealed similar preterm birth and low birth weight rates after IVF among fertile couples vs infertile couples. Possibly assisted reproductive technology procedures, rather than infertility itself, may account for the differences in perinatal outcomes.
