Obesity can contribute to severe persistent allergic rhinitis in children through leptin and interleukin-1β

International Archives of Allergy and Immunology Mar 06, 2021

Han MW, Kim SH, Oh I, et al. - Since obesity/overweight is correlated with a higher risk of allergic rhinitis (AR) in children, researchers looked into the mechanisms by which obesity affects the severity of AR through leptin and interleukin (IL)-1β. The sample consisted of 210 patients with AR and 82 individuals without AR. According to results, IL-1, a biomarker of active inflammation in AR, was significantly higher in people with AR than in people without it, and it was significantly higher in obese people than in normal-weight people. Regression analysis demonstrated that the leptin level was linked to increased IL-1β expression in children with AR. Such findings indicate that obesity is a significant risk factor for the exacerbation of symptoms and leptin can exacerbate inflammation as well as severe and persistent symptoms by IL-1β in AR.
