Non-obstetric causes of severe maternal complications: A secondary analysis of the Nigeria Near-miss and Maternal Death Survey
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Mar 27, 2019
Adeniran AS, et al. - In order to determine the burden, causes and outcomes of severe non-obstetric maternal complications in Nigerian public tertiary hospitals, researchers performed secondary analysis of a nationwide cross-sectional study of women admitted with complications during pregnancy, childbirth or puerperium. They identified 100,107 women who were admitted with complications; of these, 9401 (9.4%) were for non-obstetric causes. Severe non-obstetric complications were reported in 4.0% (375/9401) of these. Outcomes revealed poorer pregnancy outcomes in association with non-obstetric complications. Hence, cases with non-obstetric complications deserve attention similar to that accorded obstetric complications.
