Nocturnal hemodialysis compared with conventional dialysis for end-stage renal disease treatment in polycystic kidney disease patients
Blood Purification Nov 21, 2019
Xue C, Sun B, Ye X, et al. - Researchers utilized hospital database from 2000 to 2016 in order to determine the influences of in-center nocturnal hemodialysis (NHD) vs conventional hemodialysis (CHD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). This analysis was done in 170 ADPKD patients, who were observed for a median duration of 5.5 years. Using propensity score matching, successful matching of 26 patients on CHD and 26 patients on PD to 13 NHD patients was done. The matched analysis revealed no lowering of mortality risk in relation to NHD vs CHD and PD. On treating renal transplantation as a competing event, they found a similar result. Based on the findings of this pilot study, experts concluded that NHD may not be a better option than conventional dialysis modalities for ADPKD in view of the survival outcomes. Fewer complications were experienced by patients in NHD vs PD.
