NK cell predicts the severity of acute graft-versus-host disease in patients after allogeneic stem cell transplantation using antithymocyte globulin (ATG) in pretreatment scheme

BMC Immunology Dec 15, 2019

Zhang P, Yang S, Zou Y, et al. - Since the differentiation of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and its extent, following allogeneic stem cell transplantation, just by clinical manifestation is difficult, therefore, researchers analyzed patients implemented allogeneic stem cell transplantation in Ningbo first Hospital from Jan 2013 to Jan 2018, to retrospectively examine cell immune function in these individuals. They analyzed data from 51 patients (mean age was 42; 45.1% women). They found that in severe GVHD (Grade III-IV), mild GVHD (GradeI-II), and in No GVHD group, the average NK cell percentage was 39.31%, 16.98%, and 21.15%, respectively. Findings support the ability of ATG to prevent GVHD via increasing NK cell percentage. In allogeneic stem cell transplantation patients utilizing ATG in pretreatment, the seeming usefulness of the percentage of NK cell as a probe to assess GVHD severity was suggested.
