Nifedipine prevents apoptosis of alcohol-exposed first trimester trophoblast cells

Bolnick AD, et al. - Herein, an inspection was performed of the nifedipine, a Ca2+ channel blocker for treating preeclampsia and preterm labor, with regard to its cytoprotective properties in trophoblast cells exposed to alcohol. The findings displayed that nifedipine could interrupt the apoptotic pathway downstream of ethanol exposure. Furthermore, it could yield a novel strategy for prospective interventions in women with fetuses at risk for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).
