New onset vs resolution of central-peripheral rivalry–type diplopia in patients undergoing epiretinal membrane peeling
JAMA Ophthalmology Dec 17, 2018
Hatt SR, et al. - Researchers assessed the occurrence of either resolution or new-onset central-peripheral rivalry (CPR)-type diplopia in patients undergoing epiretinal membrane (ERM) peeling. They conducted this prospective cohort study from July 2014 to April 2018 at a tertiary referral medical center and included 33 adults with ERM who were undergoing peeling surgery with planned preoperative to postoperative analysis. Findings suggested the probability of epiretinal membrane peeling to result in resolution of diplopia in some patients but new-onset diplopia in others. When counseling patients regarding the risks of new-onset diplopia, these findings may be valuable. Better postoperative operated-eye visual acuity and new-onset diplopia postoperatively were seen to be somewhat associated, as did greater postoperative aniseikonia.
