Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio predicts glucocorticoid resistance in polymyalgia rheumatica

International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Oct 20, 2020

Owen CE, McMaster C, Liew DFL, et al. - In several rheumatic diseases, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) associate with disease activity; nevertheless, their usefulness in polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) remains unclear. This research was sought to evaluate their relationship with disease activity and glucocorticoid resistance in PMR. Researchers obtained data for disease activity and full blood examination from a prospective observational cohort comprising newly diagnosed, steroid‐naïve PMR patients treated with low‐dose glucocorticoid therapy. A total of 32 patients were included in the study. The data revealed that in newly diagnosed PMR patients, baseline NLR can predict glucocorticoid resistance. The results recognize that in PMR, both NLR and PLR may be reliable biomarkers of disease activity.
