Nationwide multicentre comparison of preoperative biometry and predictability of cataract surgery in Japan
British Journal of Ophthalmology Jun 13, 2021
Kamiya K, Hayashi K, Tanabe M, et al. - In the present multicenter study, researchers sought to prospectively compare the preoperative biometry, and the refractive precision of cataract surgery, among 12 nationwide major surgical facilities in Japan. The authors collected preoperative biometric data from 2,143 eyes of 2,143 consecutive patients undergoing standard cataract surgery at major 12 facilities and compared their preoperative biometry as well as postoperative refractive accuracy. They observed significant variations in most preoperative variables like axial length, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, and central corneal thickness, except for mean keratometry and corneal astigmatism, among the 12 surgical sites. Regional differences in preoperative biometry were not always insignificant, and the optimized intraocular lens power calculation formula differed between the 12 facilities. The findings emphasize the importance of optimizing these formulas individually at each facility, particularly in light of these biometric variations.
