National trends in racial and ethnic disparities in antihypertensive medication use and blood pressure control among adults with hypertension, 2011–2018

Hypertension Nov 18, 2021

Lu Y, Liu Y, Dhingra LS, et al. - Over the study span, the persistence of racial and ethnic disparities in awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension was noted, and these differences were consistent across age, gender, and income strata. In Asian and Hispanic individuals, but not in Black people, lower awareness and treatment were significantly related to lower hypertension control.

  • Recent trends in racial and ethnic disparities in awareness and antihypertensive medication use, as well as their link with racial and ethnic differences in hypertension control, were studied by utilizing data from 8,095 hypertensive people aged ≥18 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011–2018).

  • For Black, Hispanic, and White people, decline in age-adjusted hypertension awareness was observed between 2011 and 2018.

  • Relative to White people, Blacks exhibited a similar awareness (odds ratio, 1.20) and overall treatment rates (1.04), and took more intensive antihypertensive medication if treated (1.41), but experienced a lower control rate (0.72).

  • In Asian and Hispanic people, there were significantly lower awareness rates (0.69 and 0.74), overall treatment rates (0.72 and 0.69), and they underwent less intensive medication if treated (0.60 and 0.86), and exhibited lower control rates (0.66 and 0.69).

  • Among Asian and Hispanic populations, interventions should be implemented to improve awareness and treatment.

  • There is a necessity to further explore the downstream factors that may add to the poor hypertension control among Black persons.
