Myasthenia gravis and crisis: Evaluation and management in the emergency department
The Journal of Emergency Medicine Sep 22, 2017
Roper J, et al. - This review sought to ascertain risk factors, diagnosis, management, and iatrogenic avoidance of myasthenic crisis (MC). Researchers suggested considering MC as the differential of any patient with muscular weakness and respiratory compromise. Emergency department management of MC should focus on ruling out infection and respiratory support. They recommended giving strong consideration to initiation of noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation for ventilatory support. Avoidance of corticosteroids, depolarizing paralytics, and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors was recommended in patients with MC in the emergency department.
