Mycoses Dec 16, 2020
Bonifaz A, Tirado‐Sánchez A, Hernández‐Medel ML, et al. - The experience of mucormycosis observed over a period of 35 years in a tertiary‐care hospital in Mexico is reported via this retrospective, descriptive and observational study. Mucormycosis has been identified as a rare, invasive disease linked with high mortality rates, produced by opportunistic pathogens related to the Mucorales order. A total 214 proven cases of mucormycosis observed for 35 years were included. Observations suggest mucormycosis as an emerging disease. Increase in its incidence has occurred over the years. The rhino‐cerebral clinical type was most frequently reported in patients with uncontrolled diabetes in this study. R. arrhizus was identified to be the main aetiological agent. Findings suggest the possible value of early diagnosis, control of the underlying disease and prompt management to raise the survival rate.
