Mortality risk remains higher in individuals with type 1 diabetes: A population-based cohort study (the Ayrshire diabetes follow-up cohort [ADOC])
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Jun 11, 2018
Collier A, et al. - In this population-based analysis in Ayrshire and Arran, Scotland, researchers compared mortalities in people with type 1 diabetes vs non-diabetic people, as well as examined the impacts of age, gender, glycemic control, socio-economic status, hypertension, ischemic heart disease (IHD), smoking status, body mass index and dyslipidemia. Study participants were 253,304 non-diabetic individuals and 1,324 individuals with type 1 diabetes who were tracked from 2009 to 2014. In individuals with type 1 diabetes, the risk of mortality remains elevated, with higher mortality in females vs. males. Results revealed that increasing age, smoking, IHD, and hypertension increased mortality risk.
