Mortality and access to kidney transplantation in patients with sickle cell disease-associated kidney failure
Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Mar 08, 2021
Bae S, Johnson M, Massie AB, et al. - Given that sickle cell disease–related renal failure carries high mortality, which might be reduced by kidney transplantation, therefore, researchers intended to quantify the reduction in mortality related to transplantation in this group as well as they focused on the likelihood of undergoing transplantation with sickle cell disease as the reason for renal failure vs other etiologies of renal failure. A national registry was utilized. Findings revealed that reductions in mortality related to kidney transplantation were similar between sickle cell disease–associated kidney failure population vs those with other kidney failure etiologies. Nonetheless, a less probability of undergoing transplantation, even after waitlist registration, was observed in the sickle cell population.
