More tendon degeneration in patients with shoulder osteoarthritis
Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy Oct 07, 2018
Mustafa I, et al. – Using a multimodal approach, experts evaluated the presence of tendinopathy in patients with shoulder osteoarthritis (OA) and an intact rotator cuff. This study included 13 consecutive patients (median age: 67 years) with shoulder OA and 13 consecutive control participants. They observed significantly worse macroscopic appearance and significantly more morphologically inhomogeneous extracellular matrix (indicative of more tendon degeneration) in the OA group vs the control group. Findings suggested that it may be beneficial to treat tendinosis at the early stages to mitigate symptoms from OA.
