Morbid obesity is associated with an increased risk of wound complications and infection after lower extremity soft-tissue sarcoma resection
Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Nov 06, 2019
Houdek MT, et al. - Six hundred fifty-three persons with a lower extremity soft-tissue sarcoma were analyzed in order to assess the impact of obesity on treatment outcome. Two hundred eighty-five persons had a postoperative complication, most generally a dehiscence (n = 175) and infection (n = 147). On multivariate analysis, morbid obesity was related to wound complications and infection. Morbid obesity was not related to local tumor recurrence. Among the groups, in the mean Toronto Extremity Salvage Score or Musculoskeletal Tumor Society scores, no variation was discovered. Thus, morbid obesity was related to postoperative wound complications and infection. Nevertheless, following surgery, obese cases could expect no variation in oncologic outcome, with an outstanding functional result.
