Monopolar enucleation vs transurethral resection of the prostate for small- and medium-sized (< 80 cc) benign prostate hyperplasia: A prospective analysis

World Journal of Urology Apr 13, 2019

Enikeev D, et al. - In this prospective analysis, authors estimated 70 candidates who underwent monopolar enucleation of the prostate (MEP) and 64 cases who underwent transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for BPH and studied the effectiveness and safety of MEP vs the concurrent treatment standard for medium-sized prostates, < 80 cc, TURP. they noted 44 min and 48.2 min, the mean surgery time in the TURP group and the MEP group, respectively. For MEP, the catheterization time was 1.7 whereas 3.2 days for TURP. After catheter removal, the urinary incontinence rate in TURP group and MEP group were 9.0% and 7.8%, respectively. But at 1-year follow-up, it was 1.4% and 3.1% in MEP and TURP, respectively. They overall suggested MEP an effective and safe BPH therapy combining the potency of endoscopic enucleation techniques and convenience of conventional TURP.
