Midline or long peripheral catheters in difficult venous access conditions? A comparative study in patients with acute cardiovascular diseases
American Journal of Infection Control Jan 26, 2020
Fabiani A, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study comparing the safety and reliability of polyurethane midline catheters (MCs) and 2 lengths of polyethylene long peripheral catheters (LPCs; 8/10 cm and 18 cm) in 184 patients with difficult venous access (DVA). Outcomes support the value of the US-guided placement of midline as well as long-peripheral catheters as effective solutions for patients with DVA. Longer uncomplicated indwelling times were achieved with midline catheters than long-peripheral catheters of different lengths. In each patient, they recommend considering the planned therapy, the clinical condition, and the cost of the device when making the choice of the device. Catheter-related complications may decrease and patients’ discomfort may be avoided with this strategy while affording controlled healthcare costs.
