MicroRNA-22 level in patients with multiple sclerosis and its relationship with vitamin D and vitamin D receptor levels

Neuroimmunomodulation Sep 22, 2021

Khedr AMB, Shaker OG, Hassan A, et al. - According to this case-control study, the level of microRNA-22 (miRNA-22) was dramatically reduced in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, yet it exhibited a positive connection with disability status.

  • The sample consisted of 50 patients with clinically definite MS and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

  • MS patients have considerably lower levels of vitamin D (VD) and VD receptor (VDR) than controls.

  • The levels of miRNA-22 and VDR were found to be positively linked.

  • In MS patients, the level of miRNA-22 was considerably lower than in controls.

  • Secondary progressive MS patients had significantly greater miRNA-22 levels than relapsing-remitting MS patients.

  • A statistically significant positive association was found between the miRNA-22 level and EDSS.

  • There was also a statistically significant positive association between the levels of miRNA-22 and VDR.
