Metabolic syndrome in polycystic ovary syndrome: A systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression

Obesity Reviews Oct 25, 2018

Lim SS, et al. - Researchers conducted a literature search using MEDLINE, CINAHL, and EMBASE databases, as well as clinical trial registries, to study the relative contribution of clinical, demographic, or biochemical factors to metabolic syndrome in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Of the 4,530 studies identified, 59 were included in the systematic review and 27 in the meta-analysis and meta-regression. The investigators found that that women with PCOS have an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, which was not related to indices of hyperandrogenism but was associated with obesity and metabolic features. They also noted that increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome did not occur in lean women but occurred in overweight or obese women with PCOS.
