Metabolic determinants of weight gain in humans
Obesity Apr 28, 2019
Piaggi P - Since the principles of thermodynamics applied to human body energetics show that weight gain susceptibility varies among individuals as a result of interindividual differences in energy expenditure and energy intake, researchers of this review assessed the variability among individuals in human metabolism that determines weight change. According to findings, it is possible to detect and quantify individual inclination or resistance to obesity by studying the energy expenditure response to acute, short-term changes in energy intake (eg, fasting or overfeeding). A better understanding of metabolic differences between individuals may lead to individualized therapies for weight gain prevention or treatment by identifying subjects at risk based on the metabolic phenotype and obesity susceptibility of each individual.
