Meta-analysis of prophylactic hydration versus no hydration on contrast-induced acute kidney injury

Coronary Artery Disease Evidence based | Nov 08, 2017

Jiang Y, et al. - Researchers performed a meta-analysis of prophylactic hydration vs no hydration on contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI), with an aim to validate the efficacy of prophylactic hydration in different subsets of patients undergoing a contrast procedure. An association of prophylactic hydration with a lower risk of CI-AKI and all-cause deaths, but not with the need for dialysis in the overall population, was evident. Furthermore, it was noted that in patients with a baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ranging from 30 to 60 ml/min/1.73 m2, no prophylactic hydration was noninferior to intravenous hydration on the incidence of CI-AKI.
