Meta-analysis of prevalence and risk factors for delirium after transcatheter aortic valve implantation
The American Journal of Cardiology Sep 13, 2018
Tilley E, et al. - In patients over 60 years old undergoing elective transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for aortic stenosis, the occurrence and risk factors related to post-procedural delirium development was determined via this meta-analysis of nine studies. In studies that evaluated delirium for a minimum of 3 consecutive days (24.9%) vs the studies that did not (2%), a higher occurrence of post-TAVI delirium was reported. According to findings, delirium was observed among 23% of patients 60 years old and over undergoing TAVI. A history of carotid artery disease, development of acute kidney injury, or use of a transapical approach were found to confer risk for the development of delirium following TAVI. Recognition of these risk factors offers an opportunity to apply measures proven to prevent delirium.
