Meta-analysis: 13-year follow-up of psychotherapy effects on youth depression

Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Apr 20, 2019

Eckshtain D, et al. - Considering the 2006 meta-analysis suggesting a modest benefit of psychotherapy vs control in youth depression, researchers assessed if that has been improved with 13 more years of research. They identified 655 randomized, English-language psychotherapy trials with participants aged 4-18 years by searching PubMed, PsychINFO, and Dissertation Abstracts International for 1960-2017. The three moderator effects identified were that a larger impact was seen with interpersonal therapy vs CBT, also with youth self-reported outcomes vs parent-reports, and with comparisons with inactive control conditions (eg, waitlist) vs active controls (eg, usual care). Findings suggest that, over the past 13 years, the modest effects of youth depression psychotherapy have not significantly changed.
