Mediterranean alcohol-drinking pattern, low to moderate alcohol intake and risk of atrial fibrillation in the PREDIMED study
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases May 15, 2019
Bazal P, et al. - Among 6,527 participants from the PREDIMED trial, researchers evaluated atrial fibrillation (AF) incidence in relation to adherence to a Mediterranean alcohol-drinking pattern (MADP). They divided the participants as non-drinkers, MADP, low-moderate drinking (< 30 g/day for men and < 15 g/day for women), and heavy drinking. They defined MADP as intake of 10–30 g/day in men and 5–15 g/day in women, preferably red wine intake with low spirits consumption. A total of 241 new incident AF cases were identified following a mean follow up of 4.4 years. Findings revealed no link between an MADP (low to moderate red wine consumption) and an increased incidence of AF in a high cardiovascular risk adult population.
