Measuring experience and outcomes in patients reporting sexual violence who attend a healthcare setting: A systematic review

Sexually Transmitted Infections Jun 22, 2019

Caswell RJ, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review to identify any existing patient-reported outcome and experience measures (PROMs and PREMs) for patients attending healthcare services after sexual violence. In addition, they sought for key themes regarded as a priority by the patients, for delivering a high-quality service. They identified 20 articles from 4153 identified papers that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The analysis yielded no validated measure of assessing patient experience or outcome. The qualitative studies yielded two overarching themes around the importance of patient-focused and trauma-focused communication and emphasized on care enhancing patient empowerment. They recommend incorporation of the identified themes into PROM or PREM development. In addition, the study emphasizes the necessity for a change in approach towards those who attend for healthcare after sexual violence to ensure patient autonomy. They identified paucity of studies concerning certain patient groups who experience sexual violence, in particular men and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans) patients.
