Measuring coping in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis using the coping index-ALS: A patient derived, Rasch compliant scale
Journal of the Neurological Sciences Dec 23, 2020
Young CA, McDermott CJ, Williams TL, et al. - Researchers sought to enhance the psychometric properties of a previously published MND-Coping Scale for patients with ALS/MND, to ensure the validity of parametric analyses, as well as they tried to make it simpler for patients to complete and clinicians to score. Four hundred sixty-five patients contributed to 13 centres, mean age 64.9 years (SD 10.8), mean disease duration 28.4 months (SD 37.5). A simple 21 item self-report measure can now be used to measure coping abilities in ALS/MND, providing two subscales with an emphasis on ‘coping by self ’ and ‘coping with others’. This helps clinicians to identify people with poor coping and facilitates research on interventions that may improve coping skills.
