Maternal near-miss and death among women with postpartum haemorrhage: A secondary analysis of the Nigeria Near-miss and Maternal Death Survey
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Mar 29, 2019
Sotunsa JO, et al. - Researchers performed a secondary analysis of a nationwide cross-sectional study to determine the burden and health service events surrounding severe maternal outcomes (SMO) related to life-threatening postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) in Nigerian public tertiary hospitals. During the study period, postpartum hemorrhage developed in 2087 (2.2%) of the 94,835 recorded deliveries. Outcomes suggest a significant contribution of postpartum hemorrhage to obstetric hemorrhage and SMO in Nigerian hospitals. To reduce avoidable deaths from PPH, they recommend improving emergency obstetric services at the lower levels of healthcare delivery.
