Maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnancies complicated by Marfan syndrome
Heart May 31, 2019
Cauldwell M, et al. - Via a UK multicenter study, researchers assessed maternal and fetal outcomes of pregnancies among women with Marfan syndrome (MFS). From 12 UK centers, women with MFS delivering between January 1998 and March 2018 were included in this retrospective observational study. Overall 151 women with MFS with 258 pregnancies were examined (19 women had prior aortic root replacements). Findings revealed no maternal deaths and a 1.9% aortic dissection rate (mainly type B). In the studied cohort, there were no identifiable factors related to aortic dissection. Low preconception counselling rates were reported (50%) and these need to be improved. After pregnancy, a marginal increase in aortic size measurements was observed. The babies of the 131 (65.8%) women taking beta-blockers were lighter, and Caesarean section rates were high (50%), especially among women with dilated aortic roots.
