Dental Traumatology Sep 09, 2019
Nogami S, Yamauchi K, Bottini GB, et al. - In this retrospective multicentre study, researchers inspected and assessed the features of mandibular fractures and dental injuries that occurred during the practice of baseball and softball in Sendai, Japan. For this investigation, they analyzed the medical records of 454 patients with maxillofacial fractures from three departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery across a period of 14 years. The study sample consisted of 51 patients [mean age was 19.9 years old (range: 13-47 years old)] with 56 mandible fractures and dental injuries that occurred playing baseball or softball. Most of the fractures were triggered by a ball's effect, followed by collisions with another player and a bat's direct strike. In playing baseball and softball, the impact of a thrown ball on the mandible of the batter can cause a condylar fracture.
