Management of juvenile hallux valgus deformity: The role of combined hemiepiphysiodesis
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Nov 05, 2019
Chiang MH, et al. - In this retrospective review involving 21 consecutive patients (37 ft), researchers examined the effectiveness of percutaneous hemiepiphysiodesis for gradual correction of symptomatic juvenile hallux valgus (HV), also known as bunions, deformity. Using the AOFAS hallux metatarsophalangeal-interphalangeal score, clinical outcomes were assessed. Data reported that the AOFAS score increased from 68.7 to 85.2. Time to physeal closure was significantly associated with the final hallux valgus angle change in correlation analysis. Although combined hemiepiphysiodesis does not produce a significant degree of correction as an osteotomy, it has improved HV deformity with adequate growth remaining in the sequence. It is a procedure that can benefit patients with symptomatic juvenile HV before skeletal maturity from this minimal operative approach.
