Lower socioeconomic status is associated with adverse urinary markers and surgical complexity in kidney stone patients
Urology Oct 04, 2020
Quarrier S, Li S, Penniston KL, et al. - Researchers used an IRB approved prospectively maintained database for nephrolithiasis in order to ascertain whether there exists a correlation of SES with severity of kidney stone disease and 24-hour urine parameters. They examined both 24-hour urine findings and surgical procedures done from 2009 to 2019. They grouped severely distressed communities as those with a Distressed Communities Index, a composite measure of SES, score in the top quartile (lowest for SES). According to the findings, SES not only correlated with larger stone burden at the time of urologic intervention but also with necessity for proportionally more invasive procedures (PCNL) as well as more staged procedures. A correlation of lower SES with lower urine citrate and potassium was identified.
