Low uric acid is a risk factor in mild cognitive impairment

Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment Sep 20, 2017

Xue L, et al. - The association between uric acid and MCI was investigated in this study. For mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a low uric acid level was a risk factor. To slow down the occurrence and development of MCI, an appropriate increase in uric acid could be used.

Methods
  • From January 2016 to November 2016, the authors examined 58 patients with MCI and 57 healthy elderly using a random sampling method.
  • They collected demographic information.
  • They evaluated the subjects using the Mini Mental Status Examination (MMSE), and uric acid was measured in fasting venous blood.

Results
  • In this study, 57 (49.6%) participants were healthy and 58 (50.4%) participants had MCI.
  • In the patients with MCI, the uric acid level was significantly lower (292.28±63.71 μmol/L) than in the normal controls (322.49±78.70 µmol/L; P<0.05).
  • For each dimension and the total score, there were significant positive correlations between the MMSE scores and uric acid level (all P<0.05).
  • Multivariate logistic regression models demonstrated that for MCI, uric acid was a protective factor (odds ratio =0.999, 95% CI =0.987-0.999).
