Low-grade spindle cell proliferation in clear cell renal cell carcinoma is unlikely to be an initial step in sarcomatoid differentiation

Histopathology Dec 06, 2017

Isikci OT, et al. - Via this investigation, researchers intended to offer information regarding morphologic, immunohistochemical and molecular characteristics of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) with low-grade spindle cell proliferation (LG-SCP). As per findings, immunohistochemical and molecular characteristics of LG-SCP in ccRCC were comparable to those seen in “conventional” ccRCC. In addition, no difference was noted between LG-SCP and “conventional” ccRCC, as demonstrated by immunohistochemical analysis of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers. Researchers believed that LG-SCP is a part of morphologic heterogeneity in ccRCCs and that they may not represent an initial stage of sarcomatoid differentiation. The fact that ccRCC with LG-SCP did not exhibit more aggressive behavior than “conventional” ccRCC, appeared to provide further support to this belief.
