Long term surgical outcome for persistent pupillary membranes with associated ocular abnormalities: A retrospective case series study

BMC Ophthalmology May 30, 2021

Huang YT, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective, interventional case series study to assess the long-term visual prognosis and complications in patients with dense persistent pupillary membranes (PPM) and other associated abnormalities treated with early surgical intervention and timely visual rehabilitation. From 2000 to 2020, medical records of patients with surgical removal of PPM and also receiving visual rehabilitation have been retrospectively reviewed. This case series included seven cases involving five patients. There were no significant complications in any of the PPM patients who used this technique. Pediatric surgeons find the surgical settings to be more manageable and familiar. Aside from deprivation with patching, early PPM intervention and timely visual rehabilitation improve visual prognosis in patients at risk of ametropic and strabismic amblyopia.
