Long-term success of dental implants in patients with head and neck cancer after radiation therapy

International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Feb 14, 2018

Curi MM, et al. - In individuals with head and neck cancer who underwent radiation therapy with a minimum total dose of 50 Gy during the years 1995–2010, researchers sought to examine the long-term success and the factors potentially influencing the success of dental implants. No statistically significant influence on implant survival was noted by the factors such as age, time of implantation after irradiation, implant brand and dimensions, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). In the oral rehabilitation of patients with head and neck cancer with a history of radiation therapy, osseointegrated dental implants could be used successfully. The implant survival could be affected by the risk factors such as sex and the mode of radiation therapy delivery.
