Long-term outcomes of the arthroscopic Bankart repair: A systematic review of studies at 10-year follow-up
Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Jul 19, 2019
Murphy AI, et al. - Two independent reviewers conducted a literature search based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines, using the Embase, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases and recruited 9 studies including 822 shoulders in order to discover the functional outcomes and recurrences rates, as well as subsequent revision rates, after arthroscopic Bankart repair at a minimum of 10 years' follow-up. Postoperatively, overall 77.6% of athletes had the ability to return to sports. With 16.0% of subjects who had recurrent dislocations, the overall rate of recurrent instability was 31.2% and the overall revision rate was 17.0%. Evidence of instability arthropathy was ascertained in 59.4% of subjects out of which 10.5% of subjects had a moderate to severe arthropathy. Hence, despite a relatively high rate of recurrent instability warranting revision surgery, arthroscopic Bankart repair for anterior shoulder instability had been demonstrated to lead to outstanding long-term functional results. Moreover, the high rate of instability arthropathy was concluded as a concerning matter after arthroscopic Bankart repair in the long term.
