Long-term outcomes for heart failure patients with and without diabetes: From the Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure Registry
American Heart Journal Mar 03, 2019
Ziaeian B, et al. - Through linkage of the Get With The Guidelines (GWTG)–HF Registry to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services claims data, researchers assessed long-term morbidity and mortality among patients with and without diabetes and heart failure (HF) with reduced (HFrEF), borderline (HFbEF), and preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). They used adjusted Cox proportional-hazard models controlling for patient and hospital characteristics to determine the outcomes. They compared HF patients with diabetes and without diabetes. Following discharge, 86,659 HF patients aged ≥ 65 years were followed for 3 years. At 30 days, the unadjusted all-cause mortality and all-cause hospitalization were between 4.4% and 5.5% and between 19.4% and 22.6%, respectively, for all groups. Independent of other patient and hospital characteristics, an increased risk for mortality and rehospitalization after hospitalization for HF was observed among HFrEF and HFbEF patients with diabetes. Among HFpEF patients, there was no independent link between diabetes and significant additional risks.
