Long-term incidence of hypoglycaemia-related events after bariatric surgery or usual care in the Swedish Obese Subjects study: A register-based analysis
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism May 30, 2021
Sjöholm K, Jacobson P, Taube M, et al. - This study was carried out to assess the incidence of hypoglycaemia-related events over a period of up to 31 years in patients treated with bariatric surgery in the prospective, controlled Swedish Obese Subjects study. Researchers enrolled 1,989 patients treated with bariatric surgery and 2,027 control patients with obesity who received usual care. They identified diagnosed hypoglycemia and events commonly attributed to hypoglycaemia (confusion, syncope, epilepsy, and seizures), requiring hospital or specialist outpatient treatment, by searching the National Patient Register. The results showed that bariatric surgery is correlated with an elevated incidence of hypoglycaemia-related events, particularly during the first years after treatment in patients without baseline diabetes .
