Long-term effects of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Neurogastroenterology & Motility Jun 23, 2021

El-Salhy M, Kristoffersen AB, Valeur J, et al. - Researchers examined whether fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has efficacy and safety at 1 year post-treatment. They analyzed 77 of the 91 IBS patients who had responded to FMT in the previous study. Patients’ symptoms as well as quality of life at 1 year post-FMT were evaluated by analyzing fecal samples and via using five questionnaires. Findings revealed that a response was maintained, at 1 year post-FMT, in most of the IBS patients. Over time, there were improvements in symptoms and quality of life of patients. In addition, more comprehensive alterations in dysbiosis index, fecal bacterial profile and short-chain fatty acids were evident at 1 year than after 3 months.
