Long term association of nut consumption and cardiometabolic risk factors
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases May 14, 2019
Mohammadifard N, et al. - In a cohort of healthy Iranian adults (n=1,387), researchers examined the link between nuts consumption and cardiometabolic risk factors—including dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and obesity—by using mixed-effects binary logistic regression and a validated food-frequency questionnaire. This investigation was undertaken within the framework of the Isfahan Cohort Study. A follow-up of 12 years was performed. Overall, the investigators noted an inverse association of nut intake with obesity; however, they also identified a positive link between diabetes and nut consumption following adjustment for potential confounders. Individuals with lower risk, such as non-diabetic people, may benefit from incorporating nuts into their usual diet.
