Long-term and recent trends in hypertension awareness, treatment, and control in 12 high-income countries: An analysis of 123 nationally representative surveys

The Lancet Jul 25, 2019

Zhou B, et al. - Data from 526,336 people aged 40–79 years who took part in 123 national health examination surveys from 1976 to 2017 in 12 high-income countries were assessed by researchers to assess awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension and how they have varied over time in high-income countries. The lowest prevalence was seen in Canada, South Korea, Australia, and the UK, and Finland had the highest. In most countries and age and sex groups, treatment rates were at most 40% and control rates were under 25% in the 1980s and early 1990s. While South Korea and Germany saw the greatest improvements, hypertension awareness and treatment increased, and control rate improved in all 12 countries over the time period evaluated. The 1990s and early-mid 2000s saw most of the noted increase, which has since plateaued in most countries. The highest rates of awareness, treatment, and control were observed in Canada, Germany, South Korea, and the US; Finland, Ireland, Japan, and Spain had the lowest. Treatment coverage was at most 80% and control rates were less than 70%, even in the best-performing countries. In high-income countries since the 1980s and 1990s, hypertension awareness, treatment, and control have grown substantially. However, in comparison to those high-quality hypertension programs, control rates have maximized in the past decade, at lower levels. Also, the substantial difference across countries in the rates of hypertension awareness, treatment, and control was seen.
