Long‐term incidence of hypoglycemia‐related events after bariatric surgery or usual care in the Swedish Obese Subjects (SOS) Study‐ A register‐based analysis
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism May 13, 2021
Sjöholm K, Jacobson P, Taube M, et al. - Utilizing data from the prospective, controlled Swedish Obese Subjects (SOS; n = 4,047) study, researchers sought to determine the long-term incidence of serious hypoglycemia-related events and to assess previously suggested predictors of hypoglycemia after bariatric surgery. The current analysis involved 1,989 patients who underwent bariatric surgery and 2,027 control patients with obesity who received usual care. According to multivariate analyses, male sex, older age, and higher HbA1c levels were all linked to hypoglycemia-related events in patients without baseline diabetes. In patients without baseline diabetes, bariatric surgery is associated with an increased incidence of hypoglycemia-related events, particularly in the first years after treatment.
