Levels of adhesion molecules in peripheral blood correlate with stages of diabetic retinopathy and may serve as bio markers for microvascular complications

Blum A, et al. - This prospective study was performed with the aim to assess a possible association between inflammation and staging of diabetic retinopathy. Findings revealed a marked rise in levels of adhesion molecules (VCAM-1) and selectins (E-selectin) in correspondence with increased severity of diabetic retinopathy, with a marked difference of inflammatory markers between stages of retinopathy.
